The McClurkin Scandal: Why Barack Obama Just Lost My Vote
October 30, 2007
I’ve been on the fence these last few months between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. Obama has the most articulate stance on faith in politics I’ve ever heard. Hillary Clinton is a seasoned policy wonk with a clear vision for America.
Now, I think I just fell firmly into Hillary’s camp by default. Why? Because of Barack Obama’s involvement with “ex-gay” activist Donnie McClurkin. Previously, I thought that Obama’s campaign had hired McClurkin because of an oversight, but now I learn that Obama actually gave McClurkin a podium from which to slam gays and lesbians.
I can’t support any candidate who gives those attitudes a podium.

In 1979, Mr. McClurkin formed the McClurkin singers with some of his surviving siblings — Cheryl, Olivia, Tanya and Andrea Mellini-McClurkin (Olivia Andrea continue to sing with the Praise Team chorus) — and several friends. Later, he formed the New York Restoration Choir. The gospel group sang on streetcorners and in prisons. And Mr. McClurkin found his calling to preach.
His following grew. With the Restoration Choir, Mr. McClurkin sang ”No Problem Too Big” at the Democratic National Convention in 1992. In 1994, the choir sang before Knicks games at Madison Square Garden. In 1999, Avery Fisher Hall was on the schedule. Mr. McClurkin has also performed for Presidents George Bush the elder and Bill Clinton, and appeared twice on the Oprah Winfrey show.
