Interesting Content for a Saturday Morning

January 5, 2008

Here are a couple of links that struck me as I waded through my RSS reader this morning:

  •  Andrew Olmsted is a milblogger who was killed in Iraq several days ago. This is the final entry on his blog, which he asked his comrade to post for him in the event of his death. It is touching, tragic and important. I especially liked his use of quotes throughout the piece. At his request, I will not make his death part of a political statement on the Iraq war. Instead I will ask, what would I want my final post to be?
  • This quiz about FOX News Anchors vs. Porn Stars really hacks me off. Isn’t it possible that FOX hired its female news anchors because they are both intelligent and beautiful? This just reinforces the stereotype that women can be only one or the other. But brilliant, beautiful women do exist.

These don’t have to be mutually exclusive. Personally I think Fox hires them for their looks; but they aspire to the positions because of who they are (the beautiful and intelligent part).

I say this not to diminish the women, but to diminish Fox - objective analysis of Fox’s reporting shows a heavy bias towards sex-oriented stories and an utter lack of respect for women in general. Don’t even get me started on Ann Coulter…

That said, I do find it.. distasteful.. that the women in the “quiz” get caught in the crossfire of someone’s Fox News hate. They don’t deserve to be dragged into it.

Got something to say?
