Star Trek Stars: Biting the Hand that Feeds You

May 11, 2009

I know it’s been a while since I’ve posted anything here except for Wilshire & Washington, and that’s partly because, the longer I go without posting, the more I feel like something really big has to happen before I post again.

Eventually, I realized that it’s silly to wait for something really big to happen, and instead I should just post about something that makes me feel like blogging and leave it at that. And oh, how this clip from Saturday Night Live made me feel like blogging:

On one level, I find this clip hilarious. On another, I’m a little offended. Star Trek never takes itself too seriously, but it’s also a franchise that never insulted the intelligence of its audience. It never pandered and it has always - or at least for the most part - been respectful of the devotion of its fan base.

This clip reminded me a bit of what Kate Mulgrew, the actress who played my all-time favorite Starfleet Captain said about former Trek actress Denise Crosby’s movie Trekkies:

Denise Crosby hosted it. But it ended up being kind of an indictment of their love for the show, though, don’t you think? Shame on her-biting the hand that fed her so gently…I am continually amazed and honored at the love I receive from Star Trek fans.

Chris Pine and Zach Quinto have yet to demonstrate whether or not they truly appreciate the fan base that put them in the enviable position of having a true box office hit. I think at the very least, their appearance on SNL to make fun of us was a little premature. They have to earn that right.

Live long, and prosper.
